Everybody is talking about EDI.

But what is EDI about? Especially since it keeps on advancing in B2B?

The electronic exchange of business data, Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), is a form of communication where commercial and technical data can be exchanged between business partners, independent from the used platform, between computers and applications, by using open communication procedures.
Another, more narrowed explanation states that EDI by definition is a form of company spanning exchange of structured business data between different applications.
EDI enables to exchange structured business data between locally separate applications, i.e. computer systems, as to where received data can be processed by the EDI partner automatically.
Structured business data is all information that can be mapped in a form and that can be exchanged between business partners, banks, and authorities. Among others, these are: Invoices, orders, delivery notes, customs documents, and payment orders. These documents can already be exchanged electronically and can be processed automatically, without human intervention.
To ensure this kind of data exchange standardized data formats are used, which so to say make up the body of rules and standards to map the information. Here, EDIFACT (Electronic Data Interchange For Administration, Commerce and Transport) stands for the world-wide valid, branch-spanning standard Next to EDIFACT there are a number of so-called Subsets, which are exactly defined and only have national or branch-wise relevance (cf. Norms/Standards).
When EDI is implemented integrative into a company, fully automated business processes can be modeled that have a clear advantage compared to the traditional business data exchange on paper regarding processing speed, costs and error rates. The realization of EDI data exchange often makes up the basis for restructuring and/or optimizing existing business processes.
